Definition

Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts. Breast cancer can occur in both men and women, but it's more common in women.

Causes

It occurs when some breast cells begin growing abnormally, these cells divide more rapidly than healthy cells do. The accumulating cells form a tumor that may spread through your breasts,to your lymph, nodes or to other parts of your body.

Symptoms

  • Breast lump or feels thick that feels different from the surroundings tissue
  • Bloody discharge from the nipple
  • Change in the size or shape of the breast
  • Changes to the skin over the breast, such as dimpling
  • Inverted nipple
  • Peeling or flaking of the nipple skin
  • Redness of the skin over the breast

Risk Factors

  • Women are more likely to have breast cancer then men
  • As you age, more probability that you will get breast cancer. Women over age 60 have a greater chance than younger women
  • If you have breast cancer in 1 breast,than you most likely will have it in the other breast
  • If you have a mother, sister, daughter with breast cancer. Most likely you will get breast cancer
  • If you had radiation treatment to your chest as a child or a young adult.It increase your chances
  • Being obese will give you a higher chances of getting breast cancer
  • Having your period before age 12 increases your chances
  • Women who have children after age 35 may increase your chances also
  • Drinking alcohol on a regular basis may increase your chances

Diagnosing breast Cancer

  • Mammogram
  • Breast Ultrasound
  • Breast magnetic resonance imaging
  • Removing a sample of breast cells for testing
